Dangerous Days Presented by Miami New Drama

Based on the acclaimed book ‘The Year of Dangerous Days’, Miami New Drama brings to life a story that the New York Times called ‘a timely and searing account, utterly absorbing.’ It’s the dawn of 1980. Miami is about to find itself in the national spotlight for all the wrong reasons. A future Pulitzer Prize winning reporter follows up on a tip. Could a police report about a traffic accident actually be a cover-up for a homicide? When Edna Buchanan begins to follow the trail, she can’t possibly know it’s a story that will end in murder, riots and a city on fire. She’s already got plenty of problems; a close relationship with a police department she now has to investigate, a murder rate that has tripled in two years and a new intern with priorities of her own. As Buchanan writes the stories that will push the city past its limits, she’s challenged on two other fronts. Fidel Castro sends 125,000 refugees to Miami, including Cuba’s prison population. At the same time, Colombia exports both cocaine and violence to Miami. Buchanan has sworn to follow every murder in town, but how can one woman pursue the biggest story of her career while keeping up with an impossible spiral of crime? As the city simmers, some are intent on putting out fires, others on finding scapegoats. In Buchanan’s world, where cops are her best friends and toughest enemies, things soon come to a boil.

Two Sisters and a Piano Presented by Miami New Drama

Two Sisters and a Piano is a gripping play set amidst the Pan American Games and the Russians’ departure from Cuba. Witness the enthralling cat-and-mouse game between novelist Maria Celia and a charismatic military officer, whose infatuation blurs the lines between passion and politics. Pulitzer Prize-winner Nilo Cruz weaves an authentic tale of oppression, human spirit, and the intertwining fates of two sisters awaiting freedom in a world of shifting global politics. Set in 1991, during the Pan American Games in Havana and while the Russians are pulling out of Cuba, this play portrays two sisters, Maria Celia, a novelist, and Sofia, a pianist, serving time under house arrest. Passion infiltrates politics when a lieutenant assigned to their case becomes infatuated with Maria Celia, whose literature he has been reading. “It’s one of the most fascinating cat-and-mouse games to be seen on the stage.” —Star-Ledger. “The beauty of TWO SISTERS AND A PIANO is its refusal to paint characters in black-and-white. Cruz’s tightly constructed study of incarcerated sisters—provides the spine for an authentic study of oppression that bends but never breaks the human spirit.” —Variety. Although trapped under house arrest, novelist Maria Celia and her sister Sofia can still hear the rumors of shifting global politics growing in 1990s Havana. As they await changes for Cuba as well as changes to their situation, it’s uncertain whether freedom will come through government regime change, Maria Celia’s far-off husband, or the charismatic military officer who has begun insinuating himself into the sisters’ lives. A passionate tale of revolution, art and dreams written by Pulitzer Prize-winner Nilo Cruz (Anna in the Tropics).

Although this is her first trip to Puerto Rico, she has an intense love for the island. She even majored in Puerto Rican studies in college. Once Maria is in Puerto Rico, she realizes that Puerto Rico does not welcome her with open arms. The majority of Puerto Ricans on the island consider her an American — a gringa — and Maria considers this a betrayal. If she’s a Puerto Rican in the United States and an American in Puerto Rico, Maria concludes that she is nobody everywhere. Her uncle, Manolo, teaches her that identity isn’t based on superficial and external definitions, but is an essence she has had all along in her heart.
