May 18 at 4:00 p.m., The Miami Beach Botanical Garden Synopsis: Poetry and Dramatic reading by Ernesto Fundora (Havana, 1983) a Ph.D. in Romance Studies in the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures and a Distinguished Fellow of the Institute for Advanced Study of the Americas at University of Miami. He holds a BA in Theater Studies and Literature from the Instituto Superior de Arte de Cuba (2007). In 2015 he attended The Mellon School of Theater and Performance Research at Harvard University. His research focuses on Dramatic/Theatrical Canons and Canon Formation Studies, Classical Tradition and Reception, 19th-, 20th-, and 21st-Century Latin American and Caribbean Literatures, Theater Historiography, Theater and Performance Studies, Genetic Criticism, Queer Studies, and Digital Humanities. His dissertation project analyzes the ways in which practices of canonization, such as historiography, repertoire, anthologies, and educational/cultural institutions have been constructing what can be called the Cuban Theatrical Canon. In 2014 he coedited Las palabras de El Escriba, the annotated edition of the journalistic work of Cuban author and playwright Virgilio Piñera. In 2015 he edited for the Mexican publishing house Paso de Gato the anthology Dramaturgia cubana contemporánea, and in 2017 his anthology Cuba Queer. 27 textos para el teatro, was published by Hypermedia.

NSU Lecture Series- Missy Dore EdD Presented by Aventura Arts & Cultural Center

Sharks, Turtles, and Corals: Oh My! 50 Years of Marine Science in South Florida For over 50 years, Nova Southeastern University has researched marine ecosystems both near and far. This lecture will include past and present research and its history. The talk will focus on local shark tagging, sea turtle, and coral projects. Also included will be research on invasive species and deep-sea creatures around the Gulf of Mexico oil spill. Dr. Melissa Dore worked her way down the eastern seaboard from her native Maine to Florida. Her research projects include areas of the Gulf of Mexico, South Florida, San Salvador and Bahamas marine habitats. She received her B.A. in Biology from Wells College, and from NSU both her M.S. in Marine Biology and Coastal Zone Management, and doctorate in higher education leadership with a focus on plugging leaks in the STEM pipeline. Currently, Director of NSU’s Halmos College of Natural Sciences and Oceanography, Dr. Dore has worked at NSU for 25 years focusing on student experiential learning, teaching, and advising.

Tout-Monde Festival: Yue Patchwork Workshop

Since 2005, in Guadeloupe and in Reunion Island, Guy Gabon launched several educational projects in order to teach children and teens the importance of giving a second life to our trash. The first workshop was about using old wrappings to create original gift bags. In a high school, for three years, Guy taught students about Eco Design and table art. She also invented a scenography inspired by the Louvre Museum in Paris. The workshop Yué patchwork is offered to children during the second edition of the Tout-Monde Festival for them to learn how to cut and sew blue jeans with plastic materials. During these workshops, they create an artwork for the Yué#Sorority art installation and performance that will take place on March 14th, 2019. Volunteer performers meet up for two weeks in Little Haiti Cultural Center in Little Haiti and the Koubek Center in Little Havana during dance and sewing workshops with the artists.

FREE ARTS DAY Presented by AHCAC

The African Heritage Cultural Arts Center (AHCAC), is providing a FREE ARTS DAY on Saturday, March 9, 2019 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. This event is offered to all first-time students ages 5-16 to come and explore the performing and visual arts on the historic grounds of Liberty City’s AHCAC, 6161 NW 22nd Avenue, Miami, at the intersection of Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard and Moonlight Way.
