This event is co-presented with FUNDarte and Miami Light Project DAYME AROCENA With her captivating charisma and radiant spirit, Daymé Arocena effortlessly blends traditional Santerian chant, jazz stylings, contemporary R&B influences, and Afro-Cuban rhythmic complexity for audiences worldwide. Her passion for the musical traditions of her homeland is boundless – “reigniting the Cuban soundtrack wherever she plays” (NPR). At every performance, Daymé coaxes her audiences into lively call-and-response chants with an irrepressible smile on her face, enamoring the whole audience in her charm. “Scat-singing over her trio’s swaying rhumbas and cha-cha-chas,” (DownBeat), Daymé’s impact upon the history of Cuban music is undeniable. CIMAFUNK Cimafunk is a singer, a composer and a producer and one of the most singular emerging artists of Cuba’s alternative music. His music is a fusion of funk and Afrocuban music. His lyrics come directly from the Cuban streets and his music is designed to get you dancing! His inspiration grows from an eclectic panel of black music: from James Brown’s, George Clinton’s and Prince’s Funk and the soul music of Al Green and Bill Withers to Cuban “Trova” of Beny Moré and Bola de Nieve and Juan Formell’s y Los Van Van’s “songo”. Mendelssohn and Schumann Presented by New World Symphony

Unlock a myriad of emotions through the music of two of Germany’s most famed Romantics alongside Minnesota Orchestra Music Director Osmo Vänskä and celebrated American-Israeli pianist Inon Barnatan. With tender lyricism and sweeping softness, Robert Schumann’s beloved Piano Concerto reads like a love letter to his pianist wife Clara, while Felix Mendelssohn’s classic Third Symphony evokes the atmospheric Scottish Highlands. The concert opens with fellow Finn Kaija Saariaho’s ethereal Winter Sky to set the evening’s magical mood.

 

I’m Made In Mexico part of OUT IN THE TROPICS 2019 Presented by FUNDarte

Synopsis:
With outrageous wearable art, fierce Mexico-City performance art diva Astrid Hadad mixes feminism and fabulosity in extravagant events featuring a live band. Hadad confronts politics, Mexican hypocrisy, machismo, and corruption in cabaret-style productions that prompted The New York Times to describe her as “one of the most provocative stage acts since the Weimar Republic was in bloom.”

 

Carnegie Hall Preview: MTT's Playthings Presented by New World Symphony

Share in the excitement as MTT and the NWS Fellows give a sneak peek of their upcoming Carnegie Hall performance! MTT appears as both conductor and composer in Four Preludes on Playthings of the Wind, his setting of Carl Sandberg’s poem about civilization and fate. Featuring dynamite soprano Measha Brueggergosman, backup vocalists, a bar band of jazz musicians and a chamber orchestra, it pays homage to MTT’s musical influences, including Igor Stravinsky, Sarah Vaughan, James Brown and more. MTT then leads the String Fellows in Mahler’s haunting take on Schubert’s famed quartet.

Voices of Central Europe Presented by New World Symphony

The final chamber music concert of the season features Bohemian composers who relished the folk music of their homes. Joining the NWS Fellows is pianist Anne-Marie McDermott, whose virtuosic playing is praised for its elegance. After its banishment for over half a century, Béla Bartók’s Piano Quintet is a rare gem that blends his signature Hungarian folk music with nods to Liszt, Brahms and Richard Strauss.
