Human Rights Film Festival of Madrid

The Koubek Center and the Spanish Cultural Center of Miami present, for the third year in a row, a selection of films from the Human Rights Film Festival of Madrid. The event, featuring films from Europe, Latin America and Africa. The mission of the Human Rights Film Festival of Madrid is “To disseminate cinema that makes us reflect, awakens consciences, denounces injustices and reflects the social and cultural diversity of humanity. In the collective search for a sustainable humanity.” This year’s festival addresses issues of global reach such as migration, gender violence, or the control of food by multinational corporations but then, it also explores more personal matters, such as bullying, or the fight for respect and the right to a good life by those some states and institutions judge as “different.” The selection features films ranging in length from one to 37 minutes, include both documentaries and works of fiction. All films will have subtitles in Spanish and English.

National Theatre Live's Henry V Presented by Coral Gables Art Cinema

Kit Harington (Game of Thrones) plays the title role in Shakespeare’s thrilling study of nationalism, war and the psychology of power. Fresh to the throne, King Henry V launches England into a bloody war with France. When his campaign encounters resistance, this inexperienced new ruler must prove he is fit to guide a country into war. Captured live from the Donmar Warehouse in London, this exciting modern production directed by Max Webster (Life of Pi) explores what it means to be English and the British relationship to Europe, asking: do we ever get the leaders we deserve? Strobe advisory: This show contains sequences involving extended flashing or flickering light. This production includes a 20-minute intermission.

The Book of Dust Presented by National Theatre Live

In Philip Pullman's fantastical world, waters are rising and storms are brewing. Two young people and their demons, with everything at stake, find themselves at the center of a terrifying manhunt. In their care is a tiny child called Lyra Belacqua, and in that child lies the fate of the future. And as the waters rise around them, powerful adversaries conspire for mastery of Dust: salvation to some, the source of infinite corruption to others. Eighteen years after his groundbreaking production of His Dark Materials at the National Theatre, director Nicholas Hytner returns to Pullman's parallel universe. This production includes a 20-minute intermission. National Theatre Live is a groundbreaking project to broadcast the best of British theatre live from the London stage to cinemas around the world including the Coral Gables Art Cinema!

ELLAS SON CINE Presented by MDC Koubek Center and CCE

The Koubek Center at Miami Dade College and Centro Cultural Español present ELLAS SON CINE, a film festival of the Fundación Mujeres Por África, based in Madrid, Spain. March is International Women's History Month, which commemorates women's social, economic, cultural, and political achievements. Joining the celebration, the Koubek Center in collaboration with the Centro Cultural Español de Miami (Spanish Cultural Center of Miami), will offer an award-winning selection of ELLAS SON CINE (They Are Cinema) a program of the Fundación Mujeres Por África (Women For Africa Foundation) based in Madrid, Spain. ELLAS SON CINE is the main program of the Foundation's audiovisual project. Its principal objective is to promote knowledge and enjoyment of cinema directed by African women. So far, ELLAS SON CINE has screened 42 feature films and seven short films from 18 countries. This presentation at the Koubek Center is the first time the program has been offered in the United States. All feature films will be subtitled in English and Spanish.

The Brothers Nunez Film Screening Presented by Fantasy Theatre Factory

THE BROTHERS NUNEZ FILM SCREENING: Miami History on the Silver Screen at the Sandrell Rivers Theater. March 18th at 7:30 PM, Sandrell Rivers Theater is hosting the screening of two films featuring Miami Pioneer Ralph Munroe, and the sadly mostly forgotten ‘Era of the Bay’, the time before Flagler and the railroad. ‘Perchance to Dream’ is a narrative short film focusing on a tragic time in Ralph Munroe’s life and will be followed by ‘Searching for Ralph Munroe’, a full-length documentary profiling actor, Christopher Diaz, who played Munroe, falling down a rabbit hole as he delves deeper into this influential Miami pioneer’s story!
