The Koubek Center and the Spanish Cultural Center of Miami present, for the third year in a row, a selection of films from the Human Rights Film Festival of Madrid. The event, featuring films from Europe, Latin America and Africa. The mission of the Human Rights Film Festival of Madrid is “To disseminate cinema that makes us reflect, awakens consciences, denounces injustices and reflects the social and cultural diversity of humanity. In the collective search for a sustainable humanity.” This year’s festival addresses issues of global reach such as migration, gender violence, or the control of food by multinational corporations but then, it also explores more personal matters, such as bullying, or the fight for respect and the right to a good life by those some states and institutions judge as “different.” The selection features films ranging in length from one to 37 minutes, include both documentaries and works of fiction. All films will have subtitles in Spanish and English.

Kit Harington (Game of Thrones) plays the title role in Shakespeare’s thrilling study of nationalism, war and the psychology of power. Fresh to the throne, King Henry V launches England into a bloody war with France. When his campaign encounters resistance, this inexperienced new ruler must prove he is fit to guide a country into war. Captured live from the Donmar Warehouse in London, this exciting modern production directed by Max Webster (Life of Pi) explores what it means to be English and the British relationship to Europe, asking: do we ever get the leaders we deserve? The Koubek Center at Miami Dade College and Centro Cultural Español present ELLAS SON CINE, a film festival of the Fundación Mujeres Por África, based in Madrid, Spain. March is International Women's History Month, which commemorates women's social, economic, cultural, and political achievements. Joining the celebration, the Koubek Center in collaboration with the Centro Cultural Español de Miami (Spanish Cultural Center of Miami), will offer an award-winning selection of ELLAS SON CINE (They Are Cinema) a program of the Fundación Mujeres Por África (Women For Africa Foundation) based in Madrid, Spain. ELLAS SON CINE is the main program of the Foundation's audiovisual project. Its principal objective is to promote knowledge and enjoyment of cinema directed by African women. So far, ELLAS SON CINE has screened 42 feature films and seven short films from 18 countries. This presentation at the Koubek Center is the first time the program has been offered in the United States. All feature films will be subtitled in English and Spanish.

THE BROTHERS NUNEZ FILM SCREENING: Miami History on the Silver Screen at the Sandrell Rivers Theater. March 18th at 7:30 PM, Sandrell Rivers Theater is hosting the screening of two films featuring Miami Pioneer Ralph Munroe, and the sadly mostly forgotten ‘Era of the Bay’, the time before Flagler and the railroad. ‘Perchance to Dream’ is a narrative short film focusing on a tragic time in Ralph Munroe’s life and will be followed by ‘Searching for Ralph Munroe’, a full-length documentary profiling actor, Christopher Diaz, who played Munroe, falling down a rabbit hole as he delves deeper into this influential Miami pioneer’s story! After the screening, there will be time to celebrate and connect! See you at the movies! Deering Estate in partnership with the MIAMI short FILM FESTIVAL (MIAMIsFF) presents Shorts Under the Stars: Best of the Fest 2021 on Sunday, February 27th. Enjoy the stunning views and sunset, then grab a spot outdoors on the lawn to watch a selection of winning short films from the 20th MIAMIsFF. Early access begins at 5:30 p.m. and the screening begins at 7 p.m. Guests can bring blankets, lawn chairs, and small picnic baskets. The following items are not permitted: large coolers, open flames/candles, balloons and pop-up tents/umbrellas. We encourage all our residents to take the steps that we know work to prevent the spread of COVID-19: wear masks around large crowds and people you don’t know to be vaccinated. Opening the door to his studio, Balanchine’s private laboratory, they reveal new facets of the groundbreaking choreographer: taskmaster, mad scientist, and spiritual teacher. Today, as his former dancers teach a new generation, questions arise: what was the secret of his teaching? Can it be replicated? Filled with never before seen archival footage of Balanchine at work during rehearsals, classes, and in preparation for his most seminal works, along with interviews with many of his adored and adoring dancers and those who try to carry on his legacy today, this is Balanchine as you have never seen him, and a film for anyone who loves ballet and the creative process.
