The Goonies Presented by Coral Gables Art Cinema

Steven Spielberg, Richard Donner (Superman) and Chris Columbus (Harry Potter) collaborate to create an epic children's adventure of subterranean caverns, sunken galleons and a fortune in lost pirate treasure waiting to be found by a group of friends known as the Goonies. With brothers Mikey (Sean Astin) and Brand's (Josh Brolin) house slated for demolition by greedy land developers, the boys decide their only hope lies in finding a long-lost treasure. They uncover a treasure map and with their friends descend to a subterranean sea and an abandoned galleon in this fun-filled, fast-paced adventure.

Ferris Bueller's Day Off Presented by Coral Gables Art Cinema

Ferris Bueller (Matthew Broderick) is the king of high school slacking and cutting class and today is no different. This time, he enlists best friend Cameron Frye (Alan Ruck) and girlfriend Sloane Peterson (Mia Sara) in playing hooky and taking the Windy City by storm. Written and directed by John Hughes as a love letter to Chicago (“I really wanted to capture as much of Chicago as I could. Not just in the architecture and landscape, but the spirit,” he said), Ferris Bueller’s Day Off is one of the great teen comedies, a genre that plays on the woes, concerns, and ennui of a generation. Replete with quotable lines, a kick-ass soundtrack, and (mostly) likeable characters, it’s no wonder the film became an instant critical and commercial success, prompting even Barbara Bush to quote the film at a commencement ceremony: “Life moves pretty fast; if you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.”

Back to the Future Presented by Coral Gables Art Cinema

It’s 1985 and Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) is a bored teenager who hangs out with odd-ball genius Doc Emmett Brown (Christopher Lloyd), who recently stole a case of plutonium and rigged it to power a DeLorean time machine. While on a test drive, Marty accidentally transports himself to 1955 and sabotages his parents first meeting – putting his very existence in question. Inventive, funny, and breathlessly constructed, Back to the Future is an unrivaled adventure that stands the test of time.

Monty Python's Life of Brian Presented by Coral Gables Art Cinema

Sharing a birthday with a celebrity is always fun but when that person is the son of God and you were born right next door, well, that’s a recipe for disaster. Brian Cohen is born in Bethlehem in the stable next door to Jesus, which confuses the three wise men who come to praise the future King of the Jews. This mistake follows young Brian throughout his life, where he often finds himself in the shadow of the Messiah. Through a series of absurd circumstances, Brian becomes the unwitting leader of a revolt against Roman imperial rule. Monty Python’s Life of Brian was a cutting-edge box office hit that got a rise out of several religious groups for its “blasphemous” satire. A number of UK town councils banned the film, with some lasting well into the 21st century. But that didn’t prevent Life of Brian from becoming one of the Python’s signature films and a contender for one of the greatest comedies of all time. As they say, always look on the bright side of life!

Donnie Darko Presented by Coral Gables Art Cinema

Late one night, Donnie (Jake Gyllenhaal) is led out of his home by Frank, a monstrous six-foot rabbit that only he can see. Frank informs his fellow classmates that the world will end in 28 days. The following morning, Donnie discovers a jet engine has crash-landed on the floor of his bedroom. From there, things only get stranger. Richard Kelly’s directorial debut is a daring, original vision, packed with jarring ideas and intelligence. Its mind-bending time travel plot is layered with themes of existentialism and spirituality, staples of Kelly’s work. The baby-faced Gyllenhaal broke through in his role as a troubled and mentally deranged individual, which has become a staple of his acting repertoire as seen in films such as Enemy and Nightcrawler. Restoration courtesy of Arrow Films and the American Genre Film Archive.

Beetlejuice Presented by Coral Gables Art Cinema

A recently deceased couple (Alec Baldwin & Geena Davis) are forced to haunt their house when they are put on a “waiting” list for heaven. When they realize that they don’t have what it takes to be scary ghosts, they hire an expert – Beetlejuice (Michael Keaton), a veteran ghost who isn’t as he seems. After the success of his directorial debut, Pee-wee’s Big Adventure, director Tim Burton was disheartened by the lack of imagination in all the scripts sent his way until Michael McDowell’s original script for Beetlejuice made it to his desk. The film went on to become a critical and commercial success, winning an Oscar for Best Makeup, and spawning a franchise that included a television series for ABC, several video games, and theme park shows at Universal Studios.

Indie Flicks: Narrowsburg Presented by SMDCAC

In 1999, small town Narrowsburg, NY was poised to become the “Sundance of the East”—or so Jocelyne and Richard Castellano would have local residents believe. The organizers of the Narrowsburg Film Festival—a glamorous French film producer and her mafioso-turned-actor husband—promise to revitalize the town through film. As the duo secures local investment in a feature film production and convinces locals they can become stars, the stage is set for a stranger-than-fiction tale of Hollywood dreams, deceit and delusions. Screening and Q&A with Director, Producer Martha Shane. Run Time: 1 hour 24 minutes.

Indie Flicks: Picture Character Presented by SMDCAC

The rapid rise of emoji (Japanese for "picture character") is a global phenomenon without precedent. Their widespread use and ability to convey complex messages have not only cemented emoji's place as an emerging digital language, but prompted difficult questions about the creation of a language and digital communication's fraught ties to identity and inclusion. In PICTURE CHARACTER, directors Martha Shane and Ian Cheney lead viewers on a deep dive into the ever evolving world of picture characters, from their humble beginnings in Japan to mobile keyboards the world over, and shed fresh light on the private consortium that approves new emoji offerings and the individuals fighting to make the language more representative of its billions of users. Run Time: 81 minutes
