The 41st edition of the nation’s largest and finest literary gathering, Miami Book Fair at Miami Dade College, will take place November 17-24, at the college’s Wolfson Campus in downtown Miami. The famed Street Fair runs Friday, November 22, through Sunday, November 24, and will host close to 500 presenting authors, as well as 150 exhibitors from around the world.

Ta-Nehisi Coates returns to the Arsht Center to discuss his new book, The Message, in which he travels to Senegal, Palestine and South Carolina to map the distance between nationalist myths and historical and contemporary realities. Leonard Pitts, Jr., a nationally syndicated columnist and winner of the 2004 Pulitzer Prize for Commentary, will moderate the discussion. The book will be published October 1 by Penguin Random House. Coates is also the author of the essay collection We Were Eight Years in Power: An American Tragedy (which includes the groundbreaking 2014 essay “The Case for Reparations”), the memoir The Beautiful Struggle and a series of Black Panther graphic novels for Marvel.

Founder's Day Annual Celebration The First Five Officers to serve Black Miami - Overtown, Liberty City, and Coconut Grove were sworn in as Patrolmen in 1944, 80 years ago. We are celebrating with a 2-day event this year. Join us for a family reunion-style day full of food, music, games, and moments to share your stories and the history of Overtown—free self-guided museum tours.

Join us for a reading and conversation with award-winning poets Alexandra Lytton Regalado and Jordan Pérez. Following their reading, the poets will pose questions to one other, as well as field questions from moderator Laura Villareal, who will identify resonances and unifying themes across their work. There will also be a Q & A with the audience. This event is presented in special collaboration with Letras Latinas. Letras Latinas, the literary initiative at the Institute for Latino Studies (ILS), strives to enhance the visibility, appreciation and study of Latinx literature both on and off the campus of the University of Notre Dame. They put an emphasis on programs that support newer voices, foster a sense of community among writers, and place Latinx writers in community spaces. They will be celebrating its 20th anniversary throughout calendar year 2024. Presented in partnership with SWWIM. Part of an ongoing series of poetry readings on Miami Beach.

MOAD and Ema Ri will host a community celebration in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month on MDC’s Padrón Campus in the heart of Little Havana. The evening will feature a reception with live music followed by an interactive and expressive artmaking activity. This event will honor and recognize the innumerable achievements of communities with Hispanic heritage. Refreshments will be served. Free self-parking is available on a first come, first serve basis. The Museum of Art and Design (MOAD) at MDC may document the event, including its attendees. Get ready for a fun, impactful day at Historic Virginia Key Beach Park with Black in Marine Science and the Plastic Free Cities partners, Ocean Conservancy, Debris Free Oceans, and Big Blue & You! From 12-2pm, we will host a Plastic Free Cities workshop in the park office. Plastic Free Cities is a NOAA-funded program that helps youth to stop plastic pollution in their own neighborhoods by empowering them with the skills to assist local businesses in reducing waste! Join us to become a junior sustainability consultant, plastic pollution expert, and youth leader! You will learn about the importance of preventing plastic at its source, and how to help your favorite restaurants do just that. Then from 2-4pm, we will host a barbeque and prep for the beach cleanup. These activities are limited to ~30 participants so make sure to reserve a PFC Workshop & BBQ ticket when registering on Eventbrite. Then we will do a beach cleanup & BioBlitz as the sun starts to set, from 4-6pm! Help remove marine debris, collect trash data, and collect sediment samples for the Black in Marine Science team to analyze for biodiversity. This portion of the day is open to ~150 people, and walk ups are welcome! But please still register for the Cleanup on Eventbrite to help us have an accurate headcount for gear needs.
