Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra Presented by Adrienne Arsht Center

Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra Lahav Shani, chief conductor Daniil Trifonov, piano Program: ARVO PӒRT Swansong MOZART Piano Concerto No. 9 “Jeunehomme” PROKOFIEV Excerpts from Romeo & Juliet The Grammy-winning Daniil Trifonov is one of the most exciting and revelatory pianists of our time. “Daniil has everything and more … tenderness and also the demonic element. I never heard anything like that,” legendary pianist Martha Argerich marveled. Trifonov makes his Knight Masterworks Classical Music series debut playing Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 9, “Jeunehomme.” Written when the composer was 21 years old, the work is arguably the first masterpiece of the classical era, hailed by lauded Mozart pianist Alfred Brendel as “one of the greatest wonders of the world.” Known for its intensely energetic performances, The Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra has claimed its position among Europe’s most exciting orchestras under the leadership of young and dynamic, Israeli-born chief conductor Lahav Shani. The orchestra’s Arsht Center debut concert begins with the mysterious, luminous soundscapes of Arvo Pärt’s Swansong, whose harmonies suggest its origins as a piece of choral and organ music. Inspired by a line from a Christian funeral prayer, “safe lodging, holy rest and peace at the last." That devotion has found a hymnlike expression in Pärt's music. The program concludes with selections from Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet, whose sweeping music depicting Shakespeare’s famous love scenes, street fights, dances and deaths is rapturous, energetic, tragic and grand. PRESHOW CLASSICAL CONVERSATIONS One hour prior to this performance, join us in the Peacock Education Center for Classical Conversations, an exciting, behind-the scenes look at this performance. Scott Flavin, violinist and professor of violin at the Frost School of Music will provide insight into the musicians, composers and history that will be heard in the concert.

Detroit Symphony Orchestra Presented by Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County

Jader Bignamini, music director Alisa Weilerstein, cello ABELS Emerge ELGAR Cello Concerto RIMSKY-KORSAKOV Scheherazade Don't miss this “new generation's cello superstar” (Agence France-Presse) when Alisa Weilerstein plays Elgar’s Cello Concerto with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. One of the best-loved pieces in the cello repertory, Elgar’s emotional masterpiece has been a favorite of performers and audiences since its premiere just over 100 years ago, and is now a pop culture hit featured on the soundtrack of Cate Blanchett’s award-winning film Tár. Hailed for her consummate artistry, emotional investment and rare interpretive depth, “Weilerstein is truly a phenomenon,” the U.K’s Telegraph says. The program, conducted by Detroit’s music director, Jader Bignamini, opens with Emerge by Michael Abels, a Pulitzer Prize winner best known for the opera Omar and his genre-defying movie scores for Jordan Peele’s Get Out, Us and Nope. Abels notes that his new 10-minute Emerge “begins with the sound of an orchestra tuning up during a sunrise; a metaphor for how we feel being able to play music together again after so many months of that being restricted.” Concluding the concert is Rimsky-Korsakov’s sensuous and alluring Scheherazade. Inspired by the fantastic folktales of The Arabian Nights that feature “Aladdin and His Magic Lamp,” “Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves” and “Sinbad the Sailor,” the brilliantly orchestrated Scheherazade is the very definition of an unforgettable crowd-pleaser and the perfect showcase for the outstanding virtuosity of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra players.
