Culture Shock Miami Presents announces 2019-2020 season

Culture Shock Miami Announces 15th Season of Programming Aimed at Developing the Next Generation of Arts Patrons 


Miami (Aug. 20, 2019) – Culture Shock Miami Presents is proud to announce its 2019-2020 season, offering an array of exciting performances curated and available to teens and young adults ages 13-22 for only $5. Culture Shock Miami, the audience development program of Miami-Dade County’s Department of Cultural Affairs, is designed to support the next generation of audience members by providing affordable access to live arts and cultural experiences at the age when they are beginning to make their own decisions about entertainment options. The program also allows participants to purchase a second $5-ticket for a person of any age to accompany them.

This season, Culture Shock Miami Presents will feature dynamic performances including spoken word artist Shane Koyczan; Illusionist, Jason Bishop; the inspiring story of one of the youngest participants in the Civil Rights Movement, Turning 15 on the Road to Freedom; and animation-based dance performers, enra.

Additionally, this season Culture Shock Miami will collaborate with the South Miami-Dade Cultural Arts Center (SMDCAC) to sponsor dance performances by Dimensions Dance Theater of Miami, Alonzo King Lines Ballet; Sin Salida: A Collaboration Between Union Tanquera and Kate Weave Company, and SPEAK: Leela Dance Collective; China’s superstar Peking Acrobats; and the official Broadway tour of the 2016 Tony Award winner for Best Musical Revival, The Color Purple. In addition to public performances for the general public, limited,  free daytime dance performances will be available to middle and high school students in collaboration with Miami-Dade County Public Schools’ Cultural Passport Program.

Culture Shock Miami will also sponsor inclusive activities and performances in collaboration with the Department of Cultural Affairs’ All Kids Included initiative and the annual All Kids Included Family Arts Festival.


Tickets to these performances are available for $5 at CultureShockMiami.com for 13-22 year-olds. Regular priced tickets may be purchased from the venues where the performances are being presented.


Culture Shock Miami Presents 2019-2020 Season
Shane Koyczan - Spoken Word Artist (September 28, 2019, 8PM) - Internationally recognized author and spoken word artist, Shane Koyczan is an extraordinary talent that has revolutionized the traditional designation of “Poet”. With his rhythmic verse in high gear, he navigates his audience through social and political territory with a furious honesty and a tender humanity that has brought audiences to their feet in New York, London, Edinburgh, Sydney, Stockholm and LA to name a few. Presented by Culture Shock Miami at the South Miami-Dade Cultural Arts Center. Tickets currently on sale.

Jason Bishop - Illusionist (February 1, 2020, 7PM) - Jason Bishop has been called the hottest illusionist of his generation, performing his awe-inducing original show at major venues across the U.S. and Europe, and opening for stars like Drake and Kesha. His jaw-dropping repertoire features original and state-of-the-art magic, cutting-edge visual effects, and exclusive grand illusions, performed to an outstanding Rock and Pop soundtrack. Presented by Culture Shock Miami at the South Miami-Dade Cultural Arts Center. Tickets on sale August 27.

Turning 15 on the Road to Freedom (February 7, 2020, 8PM) tells the true story of Lynda Blackmon Lowery, one of the youngest participants in the Selma to Montgomery march in 1965, who was jailed nine times before her fifteenth birthday. Lowery fought alongside Martin Luther King, Jr. for the right to vote. Presented by Culture Shock Miami at The Miami-Dade County Auditorium. Tickets on sale August 27.

enra (April 3, 2020, 8PM) - Named after the mythical-shape-shifting and smoke-like Japanese spirit, supergroup enra combines martial arts, rhythmic gymnastics, juggling, classical ballet, street dance and vivid digital art projections to create a supernatural, futuristic theatrical magic, riffing on Japanese pop culture and appealing to audiences worldwide. enra has performed on America’s Got Talent, at the Cannes Film Festival, and has been seen by millions online. Presented by Culture Shock Miami at the South Miami-Dade Cultural Arts Center. Tickets on sale August 27.

 

More than 120,000 tickets have been sold through Culture Shock Miami since its launch in 2004. These tickets have been provided in part by over 200 institutions throughout Miami-Dade County including: Actors’ Playhouse, Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts, African Heritage Cultural Arts Center, Coconut Grove Arts Festival, Dranoff 2 Piano Foundation, Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden, Florida Grand Opera, Florida International University, FUNDarte, GableStage, Lowe Art Museum, Miami City Ballet, Miami-Dade County Auditorium, Miami Symphony Orchestra, New World Symphony, Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM), Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science, South Miami-Dade Cultural Arts Center, Vizcaya Museum and Gardens, and ZooMiami. Tickets to the 2019/20 performances presented by cultural partners will be available for sale on October 1 on the program’s website.
