After grad school, Catherine and Gwen chose polar opposite paths. Catherine built a career as a rockstar academic, while Gwen built a home with her husband and children. Decades later, unfulfilled in polar opposite ways, each woman covets the other’s life, commencing a dangerous game of musical chairs—the prize being Gwen’s husband. Our Dear Dead Drug Lord Presented by Zoetic Stage and Arsht Center

In this New York Times Critic’s Pick by South Florida’s own Alexis Scheer, four teenage girls gather in a Miami treehouse to summon the ghost of Pablo Escobar. Whiplashing between laugh-out-loud humor and stop-you-in-your-tracks drama, this wicked new play explores the darkest corners of the human heart. Theatre Scene called the play "the work of a born playwright and a unique new voice." Scheer is a Miami native and New World School of the Arts alum. She holds a BFA in musical theater from The Boston Conservatory and an MFA in playwriting from Boston University. Intimate in nature yet universal in its ability to explore the need to connect, the play is an unflinching and powerful reminder of what it means to be human. The Cuban Vote Presented by Miami New Drama

The heir apparent to a Miami political dynasty, Carolina Clarens, is the seemingly perfect candidate to be the next mayor. The only problem is…nobody likes her. Why? She’s an arrogantly honest candidate whose scorched earth style rattles the city’s political power players. She is tanking in the polls. Enter Alex, the slick D.C. political consultant tasked with smoothing out her edges and getting her the unpredictable Cuban Vote. Based on Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew, The Cuban Vote draws you into the middle of Carolina and Alex’s quest for the Miami Mayorship…and each other. A romantic political comedy that can only happen in Miami, turns into tremendo arroz con mango and all for the coveted Cuban vote. They say all is fair in love and war, but nothing is fair in love and politics. A world-premiere play by Carmen Pelaez (Miami New Drama’s Fake and 7 Deadly Sins), directed by Loretta Greco (New York premieres of The Story, Lackawanna Blues, Two Sisters and a Piano – The Public/NYSF).

Out In The Tropics Ft. Andares By Makuyeika Theatre Collective

Makuyeika uses keen, artistic sensibility to address themes of great social, cultural, and human value that create original narratives and theatricalities of Mexicos indigenous people. Makuyeika means wayfarer in the language of the Wixarika people and was formed, as part of a Julie Taymor World Theatre Fellowship project. Andares (Pathways) centers on the lives of indigenous youths in Mexico, devised collectively through personal anecdotes, ancestral myths, as well as traditional music and art forms. The play shines light on a range of realities; land usurpation, widespread violence, ancestral duties, and community resistance that indigenous people face at the crossroads of modern life and tradition. Andares is a genuine, eye-opening, and intimate close-up on Mexico's most remote corners and the extraordinary stories of its humble, everyday inhabitants.
