Program Order:

This Porous Earth (2023, 11:47 min, World Premiere, Miami)

Smita Sen

What is it about a location that preserves the soul of another? This Porous Earth is a dance film that lingers in the shallow pools and mangrove swamps of South Florida, probing at the nature of grief, memory, and the airy bedrock that carries it all.

Oxowusi (2023, 13:57 min, World Premiere, Miami)

Augusto Soledade and Gabriel Yjalade

Oxowusi juxtaposes certain aspects of a Candomble initiate with the Yoruba-based tale of how Oxossi, the one arrow hunter, became a deity. It seeks to reflect on the relevance of ancestral memory and our connection to the contemporary life.

From A Season Cocooned (2021, 5:09 min, Miami)

Ryan Swartzlander and Pangea Kali Virga

A colorful montage of movement, fashion, nature and metamorphosis transforms into a story of adaptation and perseverance… one eerily and powerfully reminiscent of humanity’s amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Incise Out (2023, 26 min, France/Lebanon)

Dalia Naous

Incise Out is a video-dance that explores the relation between the intimate and the political, through the testimonies of women sharing stories about their relationship to their bodies and femininity. The action goes to the inside of a wounded body and its faculty of resilience from a physical/emotional scar.

BUOYANT (2023, 19 min, Vietnam)

Toan Thanh Doan & Hoang-Phuc Nguyen-Le

In this non-dialogue tale, taking place along the coast of Vietnam, a mermaid is rescued from the fish market by a fisherman. As the hero carries her back to the ocean, they are joined by two seahorses. Upon her wake at the beach, the mermaid performs a sensual dance. But her joy is cut short: the waves have other plans.

URBAN GENESIS (2023, 18 min, France/Vietnam)

Fu Le

Phuong is released from prison and returns to her home province. She finds Khang, her childhood sweetheart, but no longer recognizes her village. The elders have left, the factories have closed, and Khang has to go to Saigon where he has found a new job. In the past 5 years, all the brickyards in Dong Thap province have closed, and Saigon is conjured up bristling with countless skyscrapers. URBAN GENESIS questions the place left to love when time passes faster than the clouds.
