About the event
The Opera Atelier presents a double bill of original works that illuminate the lives, struggles, and creative brilliance of historical figures who transcended the limitations of their time. At the heart of this program is Sor Juana Inés, an original interdisciplinary creation by The Opera Atelier inspired by the life and legacy of Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, the extraordinary self-taught intellectual of 17th‑century Mexico. Widely regarded as Spanish America’s first feminist, Sor Juana defied the constraints imposed by colonial and ecclesiastical authority, producing some of the most profound writing in the Spanish language — all from within the confines of a nun’s cell. Her voice continues to resonate as one of the most powerful and enduring in the literary canon.
The evening also features Frau Haydn i Trouble, a chamber opera by Daniel Daroca, produced by The Opera Atelier. This work explores, with wit and emotional nuance, the inner worlds, creative tensions, and personal dilemmas of its protagonists. Together, these two operas form a compelling double bill that reflects The Opera Atelier’s commitment to contemporary creation, interdisciplinary collaboration, and the exploration of narratives that illuminate the human experience.
